In 1993 The Lameroo & DFL and The Murraylands FL participated in a trial round where each club from both leagues would play against one other in a minor round, with no premiership points awarded, testing the waters for what the future may hold were both leagues to combine. It proved to be successful enough for the Leagues to negotiate a merger.
At the end of 1993 it was evident to both the Lameroo & DFL and the Murraylands FL that country football was in need of great changes due to the diminishing numbers in all Mallee regions, with the possibility of clubs folding. There had already been many mergers of two clubs within both Leagues and the LDFL & MFL had the foresight to merge associations and so The Mallee Football League was formed in 1994.
