Goorambat is a rural village 17 kilometres north of Benalla.James S. Hall, with his family, travelled by bullock team from the Plenty River, near Whittlesea, and selected land on the Broken Creek in 1861. His four sons, including Ben Hall, farmed the land and afterwards they became flourmillers, general store operators and hotel-keepers, and founded the town of Goorambat, on the railway line, and these business' flourished for some time. The Methodist church was opened in 1865 and the first Common School, opened near Goorambat in 1865.The railway line was opened to Goorambat in 1883 and a little later extended to Yarrawonga. A wood yard, for the transport of firewood to Melbourne, and a flour mill (1884-1921) were opened beside the station. At the time of the opening the town boomed, but the mill closed in 1921. The Goorambat Recreation Reserve is next to the old primary school, which opened in 1865, had 19 pupils in 1998 and unfortunately closed in 2010. The Mechanics' Institute hall was opened in 1888 and is still in use.The Goorambat Cricket Club was formed around 1888.There are grain silos by the old Oaklands Railway Line station which were built in 1943.In March 1954 Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip's arrived at the Goorambat Railway Station and stayed overnight in their carriage.Wheat and sheep farming has now replaced the traditional dairying in most areas around Goorambat.
