Jacana Football Club will be reaching for finals glory and nothing less this season, says coach Aaron Collins, especially with the results of the latest pre-season matches.
“We’ve had a lot stronger numbers since Christmas, and the boys are enjoying the new game plan we’re implementing,” Collins said.
The coach has described reaching the top five as the Jaguars’ main ambition for the upcoming season, and labels any position less than the finals as a failure on his part.
“That kind of pressure helps me get the best out of myself as coach,” he said.
New recruits Billy Morrison and Beau Naim - who are returning to the club as seniors - Matthew O’Rourke and Luke Anderson are a major reason for Collins’ high hopes for the club.
“Matty and Billy are flying at the moment, both are strong leaders.”
“Luke is a great ruckman, we’re lucky to have him”.
Aside from Morrison and Naim, the recruits have come from a range of clubs and leagues; O’Rourke comes from East Brighton, while Anderson hails from Wallan.
Collins also sang the praises of some younger players who are looking to make a name for themselves, such as Anthony Young, saying that there is a “great buzz” among the club about their potential.
A number of players, such as brothers Aaron and Jacob Austin, didn’t make the pre-season due to cricket finals commitments, but will be expected to return for the season.
The coach felt “extremely happy” with the results of last week’s match against Richmond, saying that the boys played well and got the results.
Collins feels that it will be an “interesting night” when the first selection is made for the start of the season.
The club plays its final pre-season match against Braybrook this week.
