Sanctuary Lakes has high hopes
Sharks coach Nick Waddell expects his side to be competitive in its inaugural year.
Waddell has been at the helm of Altona's under-18 team for the past four seasons and also previously held a role at Point Cook.
We don't expect to finish in the top couple of sides, but we think we may be a bit more competitive than we first thought, anyway," he said.
The focus is just to get as many guys down there as possible. The fitness is the biggest thing at the moment and I guess the camaraderie among the group, which is actually heading in the right direction.
Sanctuary Lakes is one of two new clubs to join Division 2, along with Manor Lakes.
The Sharks will start their season against Sunshine Heights at Featherbrook Reserve on April 6, with the Storm to meet the Laverton Magpies at Howqua Reserve.
Waddell reported "very positive" training numbers of more than 40 for each session..
Waddell said Sanctuary Lakes had secured some significant signings, but he refused to reveal names just yet.
He said the main goal this season was to field two senior sides, something the Sharks think they will achieve.
"Absolutely. We've had close to 50 already come down and every day I'm getting other guys that are texting me and ringing me. We're extremely confident that we will field a senior and reserves side," he said.
Waddell was pleased to take on his new role, one sure to provide a long list of challenges.
"I got a feel for what was happening down there at Sanctuary Lakes and went to a couple of meetings and someone mentioned about getting a senior side up," he said.
"Because I'd dealt with a lot of kids in the area for so long and I've kept in touch with a lot of those kids as well.
"We've got a lot of extroverts this year, which is really good. I think the hardest bit of coaching is getting guys to actually come out of their shell and, being new guys, they tend to go into their shell a little bit. We've got some good personalities in there which is really pleasing.
"Training on good facilities has helped as well. We've got a really good ground and the lighting is just going to be really good to train under as well. The lights are as good as every other club, if not better, in the comp.
Waddell said the club's junior arm was flying, with sides expected to be registered in all age groups except under-13s and under-18s.
