YOUTH GIRLS ACADEMY COACH EDUCATION & MENTORING PROGRAM
YOUTH GIRLS ACADEMY SUMMARY
Established in 2008, AFL Victoria’s Youth Girls Academy is an on and off field football development for Victoria’s most promising Youth Girls footballers and female field umpires. From 2011, a coaching development program will be integrated into the Academy. Based at the Essendon Football Club and supported by the Bill Hutchison Foundation, the squad meets monthly from February until November.
AIM
The aim of this project is to establish a coach education and mentoring program as part of AFL Victoria’s Youth Girls Academy.
RATIONALE
Whilst great efforts have gone into improving the participation rate of girls and women in football, limited resources have meant that players and umpires have been prioritised for development opportunities over coaches. AFL Victoria has also identified that there is a need to invest in the development of coaches within the Youth Girls program and to attract female players within the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) to coaching. With AFL Victoria’s Youth Girls Academy now firmly established, an opportunity now exists to introduce a coaching development segment within the Youth Girls Academy, ensuring that AFL Victoria will produce quality coaches as well as players and umpires.
PROGRAM SUMMARY
Youth Girls Academy Coaches will be mentored in their coaching across the year by the Academy’s Head Coach. They will be required to assist in talent identification within Youth Girls competitions and in the assessment of Youth Girls Academy players.
