The Weightlifting competition will be held in accordance with
the
rules of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and will
feature male and female lifters in 16 different categories. The Men's
Powerlifting for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD) will be
integrated into the Weightlifting competition. Each category will be
decided within a single session with 16 gold medals being awarded
across the nine-day program.
All Weightlifting events will be conducted in a purpose-built,
temporary facility within the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The Centre
will feature full athlete warm-up facilities and an IWF-approved
competition arena.
Weightlifting consists of two movements executed in a standard
order: first the snatch and then the clean and jerk. Each athlete has
the right to three attempts for each movement. Athletes within each
category (with the exception of EAD Powerlifting) are required to
complete lifts in both movements. The athlete's best performance in
both movements are added together to determine the final placement
within the competition.
Men's EAD Powerlifting will be a single open category event
encompassing all weight categories. EAD Powerlifting athletes compete
in a horizontal lying position (on their back) on a specially designed
bench. The athlete must complete a successful bench press within two
minutes, incorporating the following moves: lower the bar to the chest,
hold it immobile for a short period, then lift to full arm extension.
