On the 4th June Charlton played Wedderburn in the third Woosang Challenge. The challenge was the brainchild of Terry Fitzpatrick and Roger Patterson who had an idea for the two clubs to compete for this shield in honour of the many players and families from both sides with a connection back to the Woosang FC. Thanks to Terry and Roger. EX Woosang player Bill Round tossed the coin at the start of the match. Mal Burge who has connections to both sides was a central umpire on the day. Thanks also to John and Max Giblett (ex CFC Players) whose Grandfather was a past President of the Woosang FC. John and Max presented the Shield. Thanks also to Hugh Ennis, oldest surviving CFC Life member who presented the best on ground medal on the day. Thanks also to all those who made the effort to attend the Woosang Challenge despite the wintry conditions! Charlton won the Woosang Challenge for the first time in three attempts.
On field the Seniors had to battle all day against a typical determined and strong marking Redback outfit. Inaccuracy at goal didn’t help our cause either and at ¾ time we held an eight point lead 6.11 to 6.3. The efforts of Aaron Walklate, Kieran Sait and Luke Mulquiny helped us finally get some breathing space and when Tom Finlay kicked the sealer late in the game after some superb second and third efforts all CFC supporters could breathe a little easier! CFC won by 24 points in the end.
The Reserves had the kicking yips also but managed to burn off a hard working Wedderburn side with an eight goal six behinds second term to run out comfortable 76 point winners. Kris Clifford had the ball on a string all day and kicked five majors. Zane Sullivan was his usual determined and busy self while Nathan King, coach Jake Lanyon, Viv Cossar and Shaun O’Connor were all impressive. This win sees the Reserves currently on top of the ladder on percentage.
A ten goal second term from the Under 16’s turned an 8 point lead at the first break into a 74 point lead at half time. Coach Dooley Thompson had asked his troops to get back to their unselfish team style of play and the results speak for themselves with the Navies winning by 112 points. Conor Lee kicked six for the Navies while Wally Townsend, Trent Cossar, Jed Thompson, Kyle Webb and Charlie Patullo all contributed well in a good team effort.
The Under 13’s secured their second win of the year to start the day’s proceedings in fine style. In wintry conditions the Junior Navies got reward for their efforts week in week out and led all day to win by 19 points over a determined Wedderburn side. Goal kickers were Fergus Bourke, Brodie Grylls and Oscar Bourke whileNed Zagame, Brodie Grylls, Jack Collins, Cooper Boyle, Bailey Dixon and Elliot Fitzpatrick were all busy on the day assisting their team. Well done to all the Under 13’s!
