Pioneers go down to in-form Rangers

EASTERN Ranges were too strong for the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup round eight clash on Saturday at Box Hill.

Although the Pioneers dictated long periods of play and matched Ranges in many contests, Eastern capitalised on forward 50m entries so much better.

Scoring shots were 27 to 18 in Eastern’s favour, but more glaring was the return of 13.14 (92) to 4.14 (38).

Bendigo coach David Newett said yesterday the Pioneers missed some “gettable goals” in many ways – set shots, snaps, and on the run.

The Pioneers scored the first goal of the contest, but Eastern then took control to lead 31-16 at quarter-time.

Across the next two quarters, Bendigo kept the Ranges to four goals, but added just one.

Eastern’s Mitchell Honeychurch was a constant threat at ground level and finished with a match-high four goals.

A highlight of the match was the duel between Ranges’ star forward Tom Boyd and Danny Jones.

Although Boyd booted three goals, Strathfieldsaye-listed Jones was one of the Pioneers best.

“We competed really well at stoppages, clearances and fought the game right out,” said Newett.

Pioneers captain Jacob Chisari was again best.

“His work ethic and play at clearances was outstanding, and Liam Barrett did really well to keep Andreas Roth goalless.”
