Sandgate Masters last game of the season was played last Saturday (moved from Father’s day) afternoon against Caboolture -- who hadn’t lost in five seasons.
Once again we had a large turnout for the home game, but gladly welcomed back such players as GD( injured in 2nd round), Scotty Burger(from last year’s injury) and Big Kev, whose duties as a father and coach limited his playing games.
The first quarter was fiercely fought between both sides with only a behind kicked by Phil. Pressure from Baxy, Carts and Davey Bennet forced inaccuracy in Caboolture’s kicking and we were happy to be behind by 8 points at the break. Steve Curran was running hard in the forward line but his efforts were unrewarded as our delivery was far from our excellent efforts of last week.
The second quarter was into the breeze but Middy took a strong mark and ran within twenty and goaled. Caboolture’s tall men were dominating their forward line and rucks and kicked three goals in the term. Dawsey was giving some great leads from our kick outs which led to Phil passing to Toddy, who was spoilt, regathered and then drilled a great goal. We went to the main break 3 goals behind.
The Caboolture team were overheard at halftime saying that this was the 1st time they had been put under pressure, so we knew we had to stick to our game plan( it’s the same every week- go out and have fun!!!). Our efforts weren’t helped when Big Kev dislocated his finger in the first minute and left for the medical centre. Middy kicked two quick goals from good centre work from Timmsy and Joffa. Bergs was taking some strong marks in his first game back and also delivered well to the forward line- looking forward to having you back full time next year mate. Nails was consistently pressuring the pocket area and after smothering a kick from the kick out, Butch picked up the crumbs and goaled. Four behinds in the quarter would prove costly in the end. Our backline contained Caboolture well and restricted them to only one shot at goal for six points. At ¾ siren we were one point behind.
Unfortunately Caboolture came out firing for the last term and quickly added 3 goals to their total. Sandgate fought well but their only points were scored by Phil who cleaned up well after a ruck contest and goaled into the wind. It was a little disappointing to lose our last game at home, but to lose by only two goals – well a loss is a loss.
Plenty of drinks followed our last game of the season.
Final Score Sandgate 6-5-41 Caboolture 8-7 55.
Mug winner- Toddy
Ribbon winner- GD
Thanks again to all staff that have assisted the old guys getting out onto the field during the season- you know who you are. I would especially like to thank the following people who have made the season possible and enjoyable- Dale for umpiring and putting up with not only our oppositions, but our own guys shit and abuse- you’re a champion.
Our main coaches Paul and Willow, whose tactics and training regime enabled us to take the field each fortnight with the belief that we would be competitive in all matches. Peter for his great match day tactics and field rotations- hardest job of the lot I reckon. Sticks for all his work behind the scenes, and trying to get the right dates for playing.
Dawsey and Jules for strapping us up each week- we have already asked for an increase in our tape supply for next year. Andy’s wife Jenny who gave massages before and after the games, and has ensured that many players will return next year for that alone!!- thanks Jen.
Thanks to our committee men who have done a great job in raising funds for the club through game day raffles, organising our 70s night, collecting registrations, organising sponsors , uniforms and driving drunks on buses.
And finally, I thought it was a great effort from players who were not playing, because they were injured, to come to our games and offer assistance and support- much appreciated guys.
It’s been a great year- thanks for all involved. There are plenty of functions in the near future including, trophy nights, panpacs, grand final day and end of season trip, not to mention pre-season training- what the???
Thanks for season- Steiny
