2012 Round 11 Sandgate Masters vs Kedron
Sandgate Masters played their close rivals Kedron at Lemke Rd on the weekend. We had beaten them over the last two rounds, but we knew they would come for a win.
With half a dozen on the bench and good rotations, Sandgate were quick to get on the scoreboard. With our usual full forward Middy out of town, Willow ventured up from fullback and converted some accurate deliveries with goals(2). Old Jimmy Johnstone was also playing in the forwards for a change and also bagged a good goal. Sandgates defence line of Baxy, Andy, Bruce and Sock were shutting down any attack Kedron had and limited them to only one shot at goal.
In the second quarter, Sandgates midfield of Darren, Timmsy, Marty, Joffa and Butch dominated the possession, and with great rucking from TC and excellent ball delivery to our forward line, Jimmy had another goal. Phil took some strong marks in the quarter and his good accuracy added his name to the goal scorers of the day. Some overzealous tackling by Sandgate saw Dale (our ump) put two of our players on the bench for 10 minutes, including our coach. (I always use to love Timmsys talks on controlled aggression!!!).The main break had Sandgate leading by one goal.
Sandgate had the breeze at their back in the 3rd quarter and quickly took advantage of it with goals from Willow, Bails and Phil (2). Banksy was having a great game in the backline, and had terrific support from Jamo, Mick, Dawsey, Toddy and Davey B. Willow took some great grabs after good leading into spaces left by other forwards. He rewarded several with good offloads.
The final quarter Sandgate contained Kedron once again, restricting them to two goals from as many shots. It was great to see Fergy and Marty working well in the guts, while Mark Sinclair had a week off and ran water (started a new job on Monday and didn’t want any scratches on his good looks!!). Timmsy took a fine mark at centre forward and kicked our only goal for the term, but once again Sandgate finished off the game and won well at the siren.
All the Masters partners and families had a great time during the match, with plenty of great platters (thanks Willow) and refreshments to drink. Thanks again to Peter and our coaching staff, Dale for umping, our runners and water bearers. Thanks to Jules and Dawsey for strapping and first aid, and Jenny for those muscle rubs. All players on the field thank you sincerely.
Winning our last 5 from 6 games has been a great effort and is a result of good training sessions and team mates now reading each other’s style, and knowing their strengths. Let’s keep up the good training runs this month guys- and try and get to a session through the week. Next game is Saturday 1st Sept 2.30pm at home against Caboolture.
Final Score Sandgate 10-7-67, Kedron 8-2-50.
Cup Winner- Darren
Ribbon Winner- Banksy
