2018 Club Championships

In October 2018 the Kings sent five teams to the Victoria Country basketball club championships in Ballarat, more than ever sent to this event by our club. Together we sent two under 12 girls teams, the Stars and Diamonds, an under 12 boys team the Steelers, the Cyclones under 14 boys and Warriors under 18 boys team.

The under 12 Stars and Diamonds girls were both in Division 2 and played each other in the pool games, both teams representing the club extremely well while fighting hard on the court all weekend. The Stars found the going tough after a first round bye and two extremely close games losing 16-22 against Kyneton Tigers and by a single point aganist Try Boys 17-18 their final pool game was up against their fellow Kings the Diamonds.

In this huge game the Diamonds got the Better of their club mates, the Stars going down 13-43, then the girls faced a tough fourth game against Try Boys Bear gong down 15-33 in another gallant effort, but the Stars got their win in thier final round game on Sunday defeating Kyneton Tigers 36-17.

The Diamonds under 12 girls had an awesone tournament, winning all their games, they first up defeated Try Boys 28-12 before a bye and a close game against Try Boys Bears which they got over bye 36-31 in the game that would really matter come finals. After passing by the Kings Stars 43-13 the Diamonds went into the grand final game where they again met the Try Boys Bears, this time struggling in the first half being down 4-11 at half time. In an epic come back, the Diamonds came home hard and with only 2 points between the teams until near the end the girls finally made some keys baskets to win the Division 2 title game 25-17 and bring home the Kings third ever club championship.

Now to the boys, first our under 12 Steelers who had it tough due to injuries all season and went into the event down a couple of players, however still played their best and showed amazing spirit. The boys started with a 35-69 loss against Try Boys Bears and they had another tough one going down 24-50 against Bullets and finally had a very close encounter going down 32-36 against Pistons Rangers.

The Kings Cyclones under 14 boys also played very hard and showed they were a credit to the club in their sportmanship coming up against Phoenix twice, the first time going down 28-68, but improving in their final game against them in a much tighter result and better defensive efort 28-44. The boys did get a win against Lara Giants 55-23 in a huge learning experience for a young team that now know what tournament play is about, for next time.

The under 18 Kings Warriors were in Division 1 and startd with a close one going down 60-63 against Celtic Tigers, then having two great wins 44-43 against Keyneton Tigers in a classic encounter, then a solid 68-57 win over Saints magic all on day one. Unfortunately in the finals on day two the Warriors came up against the Phoenix who beat our boys 43-63 to end their run, but they are a bottom age team and will surely have a good shot next year!

The club is proud of everyones efforts, it was a huge weekend away and we look forward to seeing even more teams enter in years to come, well done to all..
