Kings 14 boys equal third at 2010 Vic Country Club Championships

The South Geelong Kings sent one team to the Victorian Country Club Championships in October 2010, they were our under 14 boys who recorded a solid equal third in the tournament only missing out on making the Grand Final by one point against eventual winners Pivot City in the Semi Final game.

The boys competed against tough opposition all tournament which was evident by the top four teams that included Try Boys, Pivot City and Ballarat Exies Acmy (Exies also being in the Kings pool) and the Kings.

Day one started slowly as our early 9.00am game against Ballarat Exies Acmy seemed to catch us not at our best against the home side. Right from the outset our opponents adopted holding tactics and strong double teaming in the paint which appeared to be allowed by officials for most of the game eventually resulting in an injury to our 5 man. An improved second half with some nice outside shots saw the boys catch up at one stage, but they ended up losing a game they should really have done better in 19 - 30.

A revised offensive game plan, some solid and focused defense and a little luck saw the Kings get over the line by one point against the hot shooting Bendigo Generals who also had a close one against the Excies, proving how tough the pool was. The eventual score in game two was 41 - 40 to the Kings in an exciting encounter.

Our third game was a solid team performance and win against Ballarat Phoenix who could not match our starting five and our dominance inside the key. The boys ended up second in their pool for the day with that performance and a winning score of 65 - 46.

Our first elimination final against Maffra Bulls on day two was another strong performance by the boys who proved too efficient and quite alert for another early game. The boys posted a winning lead which they hung onto all game ending in a 33 - 26 score line to the Kings. Maffra destroyed their previous opponents on day one but were no match for our inside game and great team defense. This game allowing the boys to rotate substitutions and give everyone a short rest to prepare for the next encounter.

Semi final time against Pivot City proved to be a titanic struggle as both teams shared a slender lead at different times during the game. Pivot came out of the blocks early with a 9 - 0 start before our boys could compose themselves, however by half time the Kings had established a small lead and seemed to have control of the paint. With the opposition's key play maker and 'ring-in' player sent to the bench on 3 fouls and the Kings scoring at will the game looked like it was going the Kings way.

Unfortunately things just didn't quite go our way in the second half with some soft flops being awarded against us in the dying stages in what turned out to be a pulsating second half and the boys went down by a point in the last seconds of an intense semi final game of quality basketball 42 - 43.

Overall it was a wonderful tournament from which all the boys can take a lot out of as they continue to learn what basketball is all about at the higher levels...

Each and every player for the Kings should be very proud of their achievement and performance during this tournament as they were truly representing their home club with honour, integrity and respect.
