Whilst we are all extremely disappointed we are heading into another 6 week lockdown period, the Mitcham Football Club are extremely excited and thankful to be able to give our loyal sponsors, members, players and staff an in depth look into our new facilities at Walker Park.
Our new home has now been completed and whilst we have not had the opportunity to open the facilities to the public we thought this video may provide some light at the end of the tunnel for many of you. Special mention to Gavin Ward who has been helping me produce the video over the past few weeks by providing the photos.
I apologise in advance for the lengthy post but I thinks it’s important that we recognise the many people that have made this long awaited dream become a reality.
I would again like to thank and acknowledge the efforts and contributions of Michael Sukkar who helped launch this project with a federal government grant of $400k a little over 4 years ago. Michael has and continues to be a fantastic supporter of the Mitcham Football Club and we will be forever grateful for his support and friendship.
Whitehorse City Council have been fantastic coming to the party with the remaining funds along with significant contributions from AFL Victoria, Cricket Australia and state member Dustin Halse who helped both clubs with the fit out of first class appliances etc for the entire fit out of the facility.
Councillor’s Prue Cutts and Ben Stennett have both fought for our clubs on the front line from day one and this project would not have happened without their hard work. There were many hurdles we had to clear along the way and both Prue and Ben were with us every step of the way.
The support of former Mitcham CC President Ken O’Meara and his committee along with the current president Alan Fairbairn, Steve Leslie and their administration has been invaluable throughout this journey. This project has brought the two clubs even closer together as we look to strengthen the positions of both clubs both on and off the field as co-tenants of these fantastic new facilities.
I would like to thank our builder Andrew Kennedy from 2Construct and our project manager from Whitehorse City Council Roberto Falcone for the outstanding job they have done. These two have gone above and beyond in ensuring we have received a quality building that will serve the purposes of both clubs well into the future. Even through these trying and frustrating times, nothing has been too hard when it came to getting the job done and done properly!
Lastly and most importantly I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of my Vice President Luke Smith and life member Garry Wathen who have been there with me from day one on this massive 5 year journey. There has been endless meetings, frustrating set backs and countless hours behind the scenes to make this building what it is today, and the finished product is something we can be extremely proud of. Without your efforts there is no doubt in my mind we could have come this far.
There are too many others that continue to help with the final touches and arrangements to name right now but we appreciate all your help and support.
Let’s all do the right thing for the next few months so that we all get to enjoy our new home sooner rather than later. Look after yourselves and each other and we look forward to seeing you all in the very near future.
