All Olinda teams came out on top on the weekend which was a brilliant result for the club.
NETBALL :
A - BYE
B - Olinda 38 vs Belgrave 15.
There was much excitement to finally play our first game on our new court , it's been a long process and there are still things to complete but what a difference it makes to be on a full size court at home, with supporters there. Recognition must go to Brian Stevens who had the foresight to partner the with Sassafras Ferny Creek Netball Club on this project, Hilltop Recreation Association for taking the project on, and in particular Paul Wicks & Duncan Brown who worked with me as members of the project team.
It was fantastic to notch up our first win of the season, a result well deserved by all. It took a while for us to get going but by half time it was pretty clear we were going to prove too strong for Belgrave. Katie Stevens was the star goaler shooting 20 goals, Kelli Riddiford was everywhere in the centre court, while Bernie FitzGerald at the defensive end probably stopped 20 goals. Lucy Allman looked strong as always, and Cassie Meadows also put in a fantastic game. It was a really solid team effort by all though which contributed to a win of 23 goals. Our goaling %, intercepts and drive up court all improved in this game, and this will continue to improve with players making the effort to get to training. Our Captain & Vice ( Fiona & Samantha) put on the coaching hat to get a new experience, supported by the leadership team they did a great job of rotating players, picking up where we needed to improve & encouraging the team. Well done to all - a great win for netball.
FOOTBALL :
U18s - Olinda 151 vs Belgrave 16.
Another convincing win by the young Olinda chargers ! Proving to be a much fitter, well constructed side against their hapless Belgrave opponents. The boys are really starting to gel together well and will only get better from here. Brayden " Hollywood" Shaw proving his worth as a handy replacement for Blake Walter (who made his senior debut, kicking a lazy 8 goals, well done mate) at full forward. Patty "cant be tackled" Rosier was back to his gutsy, strong, courageous best with a BOG performance. Pat has a strong desire to play seniors and going by his form Saturday there should be some senior players a little concerned about their spot in the side. Luke Van Lierop was another stellar player kicking 7 goals as a very hard working rover/half forward. Owen Raszkewicz once again was a solid contributor.
A few special mentions should go to Sammy "Richo" Schauble who has improved out of site this year, a perfect example for what a good pre season can to for you. Jai " Pooey" Mathewson kicked a couple of memorable goals.
Our ever reliable backline cannot go unmentioned with the usual suspects Callum Beattie, Ryan McNab, Tom Lazdins, Tom Dawson, Josh Wallis and Dom Woodfield all holding there own and some down back.
Just a special mention to Dylan Troutman (another under 18) well done on a best on ground performance in the senior side.
2nds - Olinda 132 vs Belgrave 23.
The Reserves continued their development towards being a strong & consistent outfit with a 109 point win over Belgrave. Ryan Davis showed that his pre-season injuries are now well behind him with a best on ground performance, closely followed by Russell Sloan who roamed the whole ground with great effectiveness, whilst the old warhorse Andy Greenall kicked another 8 goals giving the players up the field a great target throughout the day. It is pleasing to see that there are quite a number of players currently playing in the Reserves who are now putting genuine pressure on the selectors for berths in the Seniors.
1sts - Olinda 266 vs Belgrave 41.
Fantastic result in the seniors over Belgrave on Saturday with a 225 point win.
The first quarter was very tight with both sides attacking the goals with little regard for defending.
The boys worked harder defensivley in the second quater and were relentless in attack.
The midfield controlled the football and used it with precision which really started to hurt Belgraves backline as they were under constant pressure.
Yound Blake Walter and George were strong up forward while the opposition tried to drop players back to stem the flow of goals.
Some long goals via the midfield and even the guys running up from defence only made Belgraves job that bit harder.
A great team effort and a great display by all of the team.
This week, we make the trip to Kinglake FNC in what will surely be an amazing experience for our club. We look forward to the challenge of taking on the Lakers and to experience first hand, the devestation caused by "Black Saturday" I urge you all to make the trip and support, not only our club but our hosts for the day !
