This weekend the South Metro Junior Football Club and its member clubs are raising awareness and funds in support of Will Murray.
For those who don't know the Will Murray story, he sustained a serious neck injury and diagnosis of quadriplegia in January 2016, when he was playing with his mates at a local beach in Black Rock. Prior to his injury, he played football for East Sandringham in the SMJFL, and was a talented sports athlete who was vice captain of the Victorian schoolboys football team, represented Australia at the World BMX titles, and played representative basketball. His family now faces up to $300,000 a year in costs to cover his care and rehabilitation, none of which is covered by insurance.
On Sunday a number of SMJFL teams/players will sport bright orange socks in games and all SMJFL clubs will be raising funds in support of Will and his family.
Our club is asking all our players to bring a gold coin donation to their match on Sunday to help the Will Murray fundraising effort. The gold coin donation will be collected from each player by your Team Manager before this Sunday's game.
In addition, there will also be collection tins at our canteens at both Columbia Park and Lum Reserve and the club will also be contributing the proceeds of Sunday night's After Match to the Will Murray fund.
Our club's and your donation will help Will to lead the best life he can – with access to expert rehabilitation programs, specialised equipment, ongoing full-time care, and a home re-purposed to suit his needs.
If you want to keep up to date with Will’s progress, visit the Will Murray Updates facebook page or if you wish to make your own donation visit the Where There's a Will web site.
