It’s interesting to see that three of the four inaugural clubs from the DFA’s first season in 1951 occupy the top three places on the Seniors ladder. It’s a long time since that has happened. (Montello, the fourth, ended in 1955.)
Yolla (called Tewkesbury for the first two seasons) is undefeated on top, while Yeoman and South Burnie (APPM until 1956) have been swapping second and third places. The Robins presently have a lead of one game and 11 percent and will be out to maintain that advantage when the teams clash this round.
Yeoman is the official home club when the co-tenants meet at Wivenhoe, so the canteen can be found beyond the southern end of the grandstand while the bar will be in the Robins’ clubrooms, with an adjacent wet area.
The teams come off contrasting fortunes last Saturday. Yeoman completed a three week stretch of victories with an eighty points defeat of Somerset, while the Hawks will be keen to put last Saturday’s big loss to Yolla behind them and will fancy their chances of repeating their 30 April win over the Robins. On the strength of that performance, South can expect to start favourites, but Robins’ fans can expect Peter Fulton to get his charges up for the challenge.
Both clubs will be well aware of the effect that the absence of key players can make, whether through injury, illness, family needs or work commitments. There are sure, however, to be plenty of fine, in-form players available on both sides to make this an entertaining spectacle well worth seeing.
Two Yeoman players who will surely be out to impress are the Saward brothers, Sam in the Seniors and Damian in the Reserves. They wouldn’t want to be upstaged by their little sister, Shania, would they? After all, Shania has just been a vital part of the NWFL women’s team which has taken out the State championship with wins over the North and the South. Congratulations, Shania! Yet another step up from being a Yeoman boundary umpire!
We looking forward to seeing all of the Yeoman faithful at the home of the Robins tomorrow for what is sure to be two great games of football.
