This week the Yeoman welcomes Cuprona to the Robins’ Nest and wishes the Bulldogs all the best in their efforts to restore their home and fortunes at Heybridge.
The Robins are coming off victory over the reigning premiers, Queenstown, while Cuprona have suffered a tough fortnight and hope for better times.
The bad news for the Bulldogs is that their forwards won’t get it any easier this week. The Robins’ defence has given up just 28 goals this season at an average of under 6 per game.
Leading the way against the Crows were Tyler Dell (how many centre-half-backs have scored more goals that have been kicked against them?) and his cricket mate, Brock Bucknell, who has again shown the benefit of plenty of time behind the stumps with his judgment of where the ball’s going and how best to catch it. Backing them on the last line was Jackson James, who continued his excellent form. And up the field was his younger brother, Riley (Wriggles), with another fine effort.
Lewis Mitchell and Mason Chatwin were top performers again. Were they showing off to their old teammates from Scotchtown (good blokes, good drinkers, always welcome)? No, they were just enjoying competing against and beating strong opponents.
Coach Peter is likely to be less interested in the scoreboard than he is in the way he demands the team plays. He’ll probably be looking for an improvement in the accuracy of delivery around the ground. But if you really want to know what he thinks you’ll have to be at the ground and see if you can lend an ear.
The Reserves are also coming off a stirring win over the premiers. The way they attacked the ball, particularly in the last quarter, should give them the confidence to go on with the job. As long as they haven’t celebrated too much!
This weekend’s games have been swapped with the seniors playing the curtain raiser at 12:00pm for the reserves who will be starting at 2:00pm. I am sure that the senior players will be very keen to return the respect that has been shown to them in the first four rounds and cheer on their reserves counterparts.
You will notice that the players from the Yeoman Football Club will be sporting green arm bands in today’s game for umpire appreciation round – whatever our personal views of the umpires, the game cannot operate without them.
Be sure to brave the weather and get down to Wivenhoe Football Ground tomorrow to enjoy what is sure to be great day at the football.
This week’s home game is proudly brought to you Golden Homes.
