This week the Yeoman Football Club welcomes the Somerset Kangaroos to the home of the Robins for the round two clash of the Darwin Football Association 2022 roster season.
After victories of 51 points against Natone and 78 points at Ridgley, Yeoman faces a tougher test against Somerset. The Kangaroos are also undefeated but two ladder points behind because they played a draw with Queenstown on Gala Day.
A feature of the Robins’ two matches so far has been the strong second halves with players taking time to swing into the style coach Peter Fulton has demanded. Now, with a couple of games under their belts, we can expect a smoother start, especially as the game is on an oval suited to the style.
A pleasing feature of the team this year is that there is greater depth, with six additions so far. Returning players, Shane Lockhart and Lewis Mitchell, and new men, Mason Chatwin, Brayden Eden, Daniel Fraser-Heazlewood and Cam Upton, have all impressed, with Cam enjoying the added responsibility of being an Assistant Coach. Consequently, injuries and work commitments can be more easily covered.
Much always depends on the battle at centre ball-ups. Here the team is well-served by the early season form of top ruckman, Jackson Daniels, and others like Dan Ellery and Brock Bucknell.
The corresponding match last year ended in a draw, so expect another tight tussle. This will be a tight one and should be well worth a big crowd.
The Reserves will confront a Somerset team which has been on or near the top for years, but with what is shaping as the best side the club has fielded for years, this is another game up for grabs.
This week the Yeoman Football Club will be unveiling their new playing jumper which have been generously sponsored by past premiership player, best and fairest winner, and life member Michael Keygan from Heybridge Landfill.
You will also notice that the players from the Yeoman Football Club will sporting black arm bands in tomorrow’s game in a sign of respect to Dean and Bradley Whitehead on the passing of their wife and mother Katrina Whitehead who was taken suddenly on Monday morning – she will be dearly missed.
Be sure to get yourself to the Wivenhoe Football Ground tomorrow for what is going to be a fantastic day with two close games of football anticipated.
