The Yeoman Football Club has lost another one of its true legends with the passing of Kerry Hodgetts. Kerry passed away on the 17th February at the age of 79.
Club President Shaun O'Neill paid tribute to Kerry on Facebook:
It is with sadness that I wish to acknowledge the passing of Yeoman Football Club Legend Kerry Hodgetts who passed away in the afternoon of Thursday the 17th of February 2022.
Not having known Kerry myself, although I have heard his name spoken in great respect by others, I reached out to club historian Danny Crothers who described Kerry as a fearless warrior dedicated to the team and someone who could be relied on to give 100% every time.
Danny went on to explain that Kerry was the coach of the Yeoman Football Club in 1968, 69 and 70 and was the guiding force behind the clubs move from Elliott due to its dwindling population and no longer being able to supply many players, to the Les Clark Oval at Cooee from which Kerry stayed on at the club for another decade.
Kerry was one of the leaders in 1978, along with coach Geoff Gaby and captain Dale Ewington. Together they plotted the way to a one of the more than memorable premiership in the clubs history.
Kerry (or Kegs as he was called) was named a member of the Yeoman team of the first 50 years of the DFA (1951-2000).
He was known for his fiery and inspiring addresses to players; he had the ability to lift those around him with the sheer strength of his desire. The kind of player you love to have on your team and fiercely loyal.
The Hodgetts name is still present in the Yeoman Football Club to this day with Kerry’s daughter Kim who continues her father’s legacy who is an active member volunteering in the canteen and assiting with players teas to this day.
The below photo was taken at the Les Clark Oval in 1974 and still hangs in our clubs’ rooms today.
On behalf of the Yeoman Football Club, I wish to pass on our condolences to the Hodgetts family.
Shaun O’Neill
