With the weather bureau forecasting a fine day and 19, the scene was set for a wonderful day of football at the Roarcon Stadium (Para Rd ground). The 19’s were fired up looking to win a third game in a row and we were all wondering if Matt Knight would continue his good form in front of goals. Unfortunately the Lalor club couldn’t field a team and the boys won on forfeit. The day wasn’t totally lost as the umpire stayed at the ground and umpired a scratch match between the boys which did give the small early morning crowd some laughs as the team mates were pitted against each other. Many thanks to the umpire from all of us Montmorency FC for being such a good sport in the circumstances.
The Reserves game was a good old fashioned thrashing as Lalor didn’t even score a goal for the entire game. It is hard to identify the best players for Mont when the win is so emphatic, except to say the backline suffered from hypothermia while the mid fielders and forwards took all the glory. A good win that puts the reserve team well on top of the ladder with four rounds down.
The senior game was always in danger of being a white wash. Not only had we beaten Lalor by some 20 goals in the practice match six weeks ago, but Lalor had beaten Diamond Creek in round 2, the same team we defeated by more than 100 points last week. Sure enough things for Lalor didn’t start well when Brent Gutterson goaled twice on the run in the opening minutes and when Wayne Pavitt found him self marking uncontested in front of goals the trend of the game was well and truly set. By quarters end Mont had well and truly taken control of the game with the likes of Matt Neill, Mark McGough, Ambrose Swindon and Daniel Sage excelling.
Mont 9 5 59 Lalor 1 4 10
The second quarter unfortunately was much of the same. The Mont back line dominated the Lalor forwards and continually repelled the energetic attack Lalor mounted early in the second quarter. It didn’t take long for the Mont team to control the Lalor team and the game if not over already was well and truly killed off as Mont kicked another five goals to Lalor’s solitary goal to go into half time in an unbeatable position.
Mont 14 12 96 Lalor 2 8 20
Lalor didn’t throw in the towel after half time, if anything they put up a spirited mini come back kicking four goals in a short period of time, but then Mont scored another eight goals to keep the foot on the accelerator and extend the margin to 101 points at the quarters end.
Mont 22 14 146 Lalor 6 9 45
The last quarter again was a procession as Mont closed in for the kill. With another seven goals Mont chalked up win number four for the year. Much like the reserves game it was hard to find a single best player as everyone had a job to do and they did it. Congratulations to Rhett McDonald on his debut senior game for Mont and lets keep the passion for winning as we take on West Preston this week.
