After playing the first two rounds in near-perfect conditions, ANZAC day marked the arrival of winter. Steady rain throughout the morning ensured that Round 3 would be a wet-weather affair, and both teams were forced to adjust to the conditions. It was Caulfield who settled first, moving the ball more cleanly and providing their forwards with plenty of opportunities. They had eight scoring shots to Mazenod’s three in the opening term and held a fifteen point advantage at the first change.
The Nodders found their rhythm in the second and worked their way into the match. Stu Ingliss was relishing the conditions while skipper, Jace Kelly, was making the most of a new role up forward. By the time the siren rang for half-time, the Nodders had inched ahead by a point.
The Third was a good-old-fashioned arm-wrestle. Joe Canavan hit double-figures in the tackle count while Nick Thomas did the same in the contested marking count. Each goal kicked brought a change of lead as both teams played as if their seasons depended on the win – which they did. At the final change, Caulfield held a four-point advantage.
The final quarter looked set to be an epic conclusion, but Mazenod’s superior fitness began to show as they slowly pulled away. Grant Lofthouse pulled down a speccy and kicked his third goal for the day, Liam Welsford was running all over his midfield opponents and the wily old fox, Ben Phibbs, was at his cunning best as the Nodders kicked four last quarter goals to run out 22-point victors.

Reserves
The Reserves faded badly in the final quarter to fall by 18 points. After an even, the Nodders slowly took control of the match and held a slender lead at half time. Andrew Weekes was proving dangerous with his strong marking and Ben Woods was in fine form.
When Matt Rich kicked a running goal in the third, it looked as though the Nodders would run away with it. However, Caulfield steadied, kicking six goals to nil in the final quarter to claim the win.

Under 19s
The Under 19s played in difficult conditions, and fell to Caulfield by 15 points. Caulfield played the better football in the third quarter, and although the Nodders were never quite out of the match, they could not bridge the two goal gap by the final siren.

Colts (U/18)
The Under 18s slogged it out at Flemington and came away with a 24-point victory. The Nodders always had the game in hand but it proved to be the most significant challenge to team has faced in the opening three rounds.
Jacob Murdock was outstanding, kicking three goals in a low-scoring affair, but he was shaded by Jack Minack who also bagged three and collected plenty of possessions.

ANZAC Day 2015
Last week the club hosted a large gathering of supporters and guests for our ANZAC day lunch and pre-game ceremony. The lunch was highlighted by hearing from our new major sponsors Matt and Allister Lewison from Open Corporation in addition to an entertaining discussion with club sponsor Carl Steinfort about his ANZAC day experiences with Collingwood and AFL.
The club also organised for the 2nd Field Ambulance Division to access the Waverley Community Centre next door when it was apparent they would not be able to access our clubrooms for their annual ANZAC day gathering. Well done to the club for making that happen in conjunction with a moving pre-game ceremony involving both competing clubs & supporters. A tremendous amount of work went into the day and the feedback across the board has been outstanding.
Founders Day 2015 - Saturday 23rd May

VAFA Umpiring Opportunities
Each year the VAFA asks member clubs to recruit at least one club umpire into the VAFA pool who generally officiates in Reerve Grade games (games not involving Mazenod). The club has been fortunate to have Sean Campbell who fulfilled this role for many years however has decided to take a well earned break and focus on watching football. This means we are on the look out for someone who is keen to keep fit and earn $80 tax free at the same time. Experience is not necessary the VAFA conduct training sessions. There is no formal age restriction however this does involve umpiring men. If anyone is interested please contact Wayne Francis on 0447252 845 / waynegfrancis@gmail.com .
Membership
The club is making good progress on memberships however we are still well short of our goals for 2015.
Memberships are a way of contributing to the club and ensuring player subscriptions are kept as low as possible and the best possible equipment and coaching is provided to the players. It is the members that make a difference. Multiple Premiership coach Matt Johnson is headlining the drive and is providing two levels of member benefits : Silver $150, Gold $300
Matt can be contacted on mjohnson@mazenod.vic.edu.au / 0488 788 270
