MATCH REPORT SUNDAY 1st JULY 2012
MAZENOD BLUE 14.14.98 defeated PARKSIDE 1 2.2.14 at Central Reserve .
Another great game by Panthers Blue as they took an early lead in the first quarter and maintained that lead for the rest of the game to finish 84 point winners over a very gallant Parkside.
After a lapse of discipline by a couple of players last game, coach Matt Johnson made it perfectly clear before the game that was not acceptable at Mazenod Panthers, and that better attitude and teamwork was the key to success for the remainder of the season. Rod Pettit lead from the front as a team leader with his teamwork and encouragement to all players, in fact he even assisted an injured Parkside player from the ground in the second quarter.
Super coach Johnson had form players all over the ground to shuffle around and try new positions, Matt Pearson normally known for his defensive work was swung forward and narrowly missed his first goal ever for the Panthers, Jake Phillips was at his underrated best with his attack on the ball, and how lucky we are to have Chris Vergos back from holidays with his never give in attitude. Panthers were in top form with none better than Shaun Dux with his best on ground performance, kicking 5 goals and sharing in at least another 2.
Our smaller engine room players John Soles Simon Pollock, Sam Samason and the man with the new blue hair look Josh Wallace were super fast around around the packs all game.
Jason Gannon’s attitude for every effort is great, beaten in the first effort he is back for 2nd and 3rd effort, during the second quarter he battled alone against four Parkside players on the grandstand wing and won the ball. Justin Dovaston was maintaining his best fullback in the competition status as he made every contest to never let any Parkside forward an easy shot on goal, and with Peter Biscognin as back up in defense, Parkside were limited to 2 goals for the entire match.
The middle of the ground was a problem with the muddy conditions that left the “Gun” Beau Gunning looking a bit like a tar baby and Mrs Gunning reaching for the soap powder.
Aaron Yaksender received a nasty knock in the third quarter and spent a small amount of time in the trainer’s hands, but returned to the ground with plenty of courage and had plenty of the ball.
Peter Zapantis ruckwork is improving as he comes up against bigger and stronger opponents each week, and again this week he gave first use of the ball to either Rod Pettit or the man that ran riot in the last quarter John Soles was everywhere kicking 3 magic goals.
BEST: Shaun Dux (Best on ground) John Soles, Rod Pettit, Justin Dovaston, Josh Wallace, Chris Vergos, Jake Phillips, Simon Pollock and Jason Gannon.
GOALS: Shaun Dux 5 John Soles 3 Rod Pettit 2 Josh Wallace 2 Simon Pollock 1 Aaron Yaksender 1.
MAZENOD BLACK SCRATCH MATCH
Because Parkside were unable to field a second side we won a very valuable 4 points in a forfeit match for Parkside, and will now give Mazenod Panthers Black a definite place in the Grand Final on August 19th at Central Reserve.
As a replacement game we were to play Ferntree Gully at home, but because of a conflict in scheduling they were unable to play, so we gained additional match practice by combining both our teams in a scratch match.
Highlight of the match were our 50 game players John Hamilton and Roger Winter.
John has shown tremendous dedication and determination to reach his 50th games travelling long distances each week to training and game days on his trusty bicycle.
Roger Winter had a big roll up of fans and family to watch him run through his big banner, and being rewarded with the match ball for his best on ground performance by kicking 2 goals against our star fullback Justin Dovaston.
The game was played in great spirit and lots of encouragement from our team leaders.
Well done guys.
Final score, a narrow one point difference, Team Johnson 4. 5. 29 defeated Team Fry 4. 4. 28

Last time we attended this function, one of our party won a 10 day holiday to Port Douglas, so please email me if you would like to attend this fabulous night.
