MATCH REPORT SUNDAY 3rd JUNE 2012
Because Cranbourne do not have a second team this year our two teams made their way to different venues to complete round 5 in the premiership season. Both Panthers Blue and Panthers Black tasted success away from home.
MAZENOD BLUE 12.9.81 defeated CRANBOURNE 1 3.5.23 at Cranbourne.
We had a bad start to the game with only 11 players at 10 minutes before game start, and requiring at least 12 to play for points we were in danger of a forfeit match. A couple of players got the start time wrong and arrived just before the bounce of the ball.
With only 12 players in each side the game started as a very open game that seem to suit our very quick mid fielders, Rod Pettit, and Simon Pollock were getting first use of the ball from the centre bounces and giving plenty of opportunities for Peter Bisognin playing his best game for the Panthers on the forward line, and combining well with Aaron Yaksender as he kicked the first goal of the day. Again Peter Zapantis is showing good form this season in the ruck, and was making his presence felt all over the ground. A couple of rare undisciplined verbal shots at the umpire found more than one player having a rest on the boundary to cool down, leaving the team one player down at a crucial period of play. The mighty Mazenod Panthers have built a great reputation over eight years for discipline and fair play in the FIDA competition, verbal abuse at the umpire or opposition will not be tolerated by the club and players will be penalized.
Daniel Hassan arrived at quarter time and was looking for our change room that had been taken over by a ladies football team, he was a bit hesitant to enter the ladies domain unless Sue Soles went with him.
Shaun Dux continues with his teamwork each week, by sharing the ball around, and doing those things to help the team that often go unnoticed , Duxy is a good example of a team leader.
By half time it was obvious that the Panthers were too strong and fast for the Cranbourne Eagles, so coach Matt Johnson rotated four of our ball magnets at the one time from the bench for the remainder of the match.
Josh Wallace was enjoying the extra freedom of less players on the ground and was very impressive on the far wing, often without an opponent driving the ball forward.
Our stoppers Justin Dovaston, Jake Phillips and Jason Gannon only allowed three goals to be kicked, and combined on several occasions as a unit to stop Cranbourne from scoring.
Dovo made one dash around the boundary line thinking he had finished, when Rod Pettit handballed the ball back to him for another effort, Justin was unimpressed, and was looking for an oxygen bottle. John Soles never disappoints the coach any week with his full on attack and enthusiasm for a game of footy, again this week he was rarely beaten in any contest for the ball.
Slipping under the radar this week was “The Gun” Beau Gunning making a big impression on all supporters with a lazy three goals from the half forward flank, his biggest haul in Panthers colours.
Bad luck for the “The Flying Dutchman” Mark Vanderven playing a fantastic game of gutsy football all day, after an heavy knock earlier in the game, was stepped on and finished the game with a very nasty ankle injury, we are just hoping that it is not ligament damage, Mark is a vital part of our success this year.
Thank you Lisa Sinclair for driving Vander home. Bad luck you ran out of petrol.
Goals; Peter Bisognin,4 Beau Gunning 3, Aaron Yaksender, Shaun Dux, Daniel Hassan, Josh Wallace all 1 goal each. (one goal missed by the writer)
Best: A great team effort.
MAZENOD BLACK 5.14.44 defeated RINGWOOD 2 4.4.30 at Ringwood.
Mark Crilly, Shane Regan Alf Duijkers and Andrew Fry took charge of the day and Ringwood this week and Mark Crilly filed this great report on the game.
Mazenod Black ventured back to the “Spiders Web” to play Ringwood Spiders for the second week in a row. A fantastic game by both teams from the first bounce to the final siren. Stand-in coach, “Shane Regan”, asked his players to give it everything, and that’s exactly what the Panthers did. The first quarter went goal for goal with Daniel Palmer on fire early. Nick Crilly was moved from the wing to the goal square to help spearhead a Panthers attack. Damien Cousins was sensational in defence with plenty of help from Marcel Vermulst, Jack Morrison and Toby Crook. Steve Wells was dominating in the ruck with Darcy left to watch from the sidelines with a serious hand injury. Andrew Conner took an absolute screamer in the middle of the ground and kicked long into attack for the Panthers. A sensational goal by Nick DiStasio had the Panthers 2 straight goals to Ringwood 4 goals 1. Shane Regan asked his players to man-up in the back line and continue to attack the goals. The Panthers defence was outstanding in the second quarter, holding Ringwood to only 1 behind. Anthony DiStasio used his blistering pace to run the ball out of the backline and help set up Daniel Palmer who bagged his second for the day. Felix Bakens played like a champion; running, contesting, and helping his team-mates. George Youssef sprinted onto the field in the second quarter and headed straight to the forward line to assist Roger Winter in attack. Neil McKinnon didn’t stop running all day with several bursts out of the centre. The Panthers were relentless out of the middle, and peppered the goals, scoring 1 goal 10 in the 2nd quarter. Half-time was a chance for everyone to get their breath back. With only a few points between the scores, Shane Regan asked his players to dig deep in the 3rd quarter. Daniel Palmer found the big sticks again for his third goal. The second half was a real slog for both teams as the ball travelled from end to end. David Gorin controlled the mid field with ball-magnets, Chris Johnson andDaniel Oakley, constantly driving the Panthers into attack. James Hosken played his best game for the year. He simply ran all day. Nick Mitroudis shared ruck duties and was outstanding all over the ground. Vickram Jholl, today’s Captain, led by example with his fearless attack on the football. The Panthers were just an OUTSTANDING TEAM today. Everyone helped and supported each other to produce a sensational result. This “Team Effort” is best summed up with our final goal.-Damien Cousins burst out of the backline with a booming kick to Jack Morrison in the centre. Jack, using great vision, passed perfectly to Neil McKinnon. Not one to wait around, Neil saw Vickram Jholl free at centre half forward and quickly got the ball to him. Vickram linked to the “Buddy Franklin” of the day, Daniel Palmer, who kicked his fourth goal for the day. Just fantastic Teamwork!
Very hard to pick best players as it was an Outstanding Team Effort by an Outstanding Team. Well done everyone!

PLAYERS TO QUALIFY FOR FINALS
. Our Blue team consist of 15 players with three interchange players only. (maximum 18 players)
If both coaches agree teams can play up to 18 players. If coaches cannot agree, the number of players on the field will be 15. Minimum of 12 to constitute an official game, if one side has only 12,13, or 14 players the other side is allowed to play 15 players. Because of this rule if a player plays more than 6 games in Panthers Blue he is unable to play finals in Panthers Black, plus to qualify to play in Panthers Black a player must have played a minimum 4 games in that team, our strategy therefore is to qualify every player to be eligible for finals footy in August, we will adjust team lists for the next few games. For our Black team, if both coaches agree teams can play up to 18 players, with no limit to the number of interchange players. Minimum of 10 players constitute an official fixture. Panthers Blue are limited to 3 only interchange. If we make the Grand Finals players are only allowed one game in one team, no player is allowed two games.
