MOE LIONS MEDIA RELEASE 2022 Senior Coach
THE Moe Football-Netball Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Declan Keilty as senior coach for the next two years.
Having returned to the Moe Lions this season as an assistant/development coach and player, Declan has had a huge positive impact on and off the field, bringing a modern approach to our football department, in particular around leadership, education and process in terms of the training and playing side which has been embraced by the senior and junior groups right across the club.
Coming through the Moe Lions junior program Declan was a member of the 2013 Gippsland Power team and went on to a successful VFL career with Casey Scorpions (Melbourne’s affiliate club) which was the platform for him to be drafted in 2016 at pick 41 in the rookie draft as a key position player for the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL.
During his time away in the VFL/AFL system Declan was inducted into the 2016 VFL Team of the Year and was coached by current Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin, Justin Plapp and Jade Rawlings. He spent three years on Melbourne’s list, making two AFL appearances. Prior to this he spent quality time through his junior years with the likes of Peter Francis, Leigh Brown and of course our departing head coach Lachlan Sim, who welcomes and endorses Declan with huge anticipation and excitement for the clubs long term future after working closely together this year and in the past at senior and junior level.
Sim said his successor was well poised to take the club forward.
“He brings a wealth of experience and a strong passion to the club which will be a huge asset to continue the growth and development of our club, playing list (senior and junior) including aspiring players from the area that would want to learn and be part of a very good club moving forward naturally in a great environment at Ted Summerton Reserve which ticks all the boxes,” he said.
The new coach said he was honoured to be given the job and was looking forward to what was ahead.
“I feel the timing is perfect and I thank Simmy and the Moe Lions for this exciting opportunity to allow me to give back to the club that supported my professional opportunities,” he said.
“I look forward to not only coaching the current group but to reach out to aspiring players young and old wanting to learn and better themselves and be part of this journey that the Moe Lions have embarked on with great success in recent years.
Moe FNC president Manny Gelagotis paid tribute to Sim, who departs having coached the Lions at senior level for eight seasons across three stints, and believed his work had helped pave the way for Keilty to continue the clubs quest for further glory.
“On behalf of all at the Moe Lions we would like to not only thank but congratulate Lachlan Sim on all his personal successes and achievements and thank him for his tireless dedication to his roles at all levels of coaching ensuring, in our case, the Moe Lions have a long sustainable future,” he said.
“Declan Keilty is about to start his coaching career in similar circumstances to Lachlan Sim coming off AFL careers and the entire club is excited about the future and it is a proud day for the Moe Lions announcing such a quality person leading our football department into a very important phase as a leading club in the region playing in the premier league of Gippsland.”
The Moe FNC will be making further exciting announcements in coming weeks leading into the 2022 Gippsland League season in both football and netball departments.
