DES'S DEMONS A hearty welcome to all clubs, especially new club Rochester; here's hoping that season 1973 will be a really successful one for the GVFL. (a return by Rochester to the GVFL after an absence of about 60 years - the News from Tigerland in this edition of the footy program commences with "after being kept out of football for a year by a narrow mindedness, football followers at Rochester are keenly awaiting the start of the GVFL season. The town and district are right behind the club for its re-entry into the ranks of the GVFL and it is hoped from the Committee and the Players viewpoint, that the club will aquit itself and become an asset to the GVFL".
Now back on to DES'S DEMONS :- At United we start the season with a new Coach in Des CAMPBELL, new President in Neil HAYMES and a new Secretary in Fred WESTH. These names are not new in GVFL football, but in these gentlemen our club feels we have the finest administrators both on and off the field that it is possible to get. We also welcome back to the Committee old stalwarts in Bill VALLANCE, Leon FORTIN, Jim O'SHANNASSY, Jack Le LIEVRE and a new addition in Frank HAZEL. These men will certainly add to all activities the club undertakes. I would like to also congratulate the 1973 Office Bearers for our great Ladies Committee. Mrs HICKEY President, Miss Sue FORTIN Secretary and Mrs Val McARTHUR Treasurer. They welcome help from any of the fairer sex, especially as the "stork" will be visiting the homes of two or three of their hardest workers during the year. Now to our prospects on the field; with Des CAMPBELL Coaching, Col FRASER in charge of the Reserves and Jim HOVEY coaching the thirds we have an abundance of knowledge and experience in that sphere. Recruiting has been very good and new players you will see during the season will be Trevor EDDY, Don MATTSON, Neil FORD, Greg STANGER, Barry CASSIDY, Ian ELIASON, John BROWN-SHEPHERD, Greg WELLINGTON and ex players returning in Stewart BUZZA and John STROOMER. The Thirds have also recruited very well with new players in Ian BROWN-SHEPHERD, Geoff QOSE, Phillip MOREY, Geoff GOOLEY, Frank HOGAN, Michael STONE, Lynton TREMELLON, Gary WHITFORD and Murray BURLS and perhaps one or two others.
Our last practice matches have been very good from our team's point of view, but I'm sure Coach Des will not be happy until the teams prove themselves under the intense competition games. The ability of the players is beyond question, all that is now needed is the dedication to paly to the maximum of their ability in every game. I'm sure that they will and that all our supporters will have a very happy year following Des's Demons. Last year we played Euroa in the last game and got thrashed at Euroa; what better way to start the season than to have our revenge and come home victors! Another great social Cabaret coming off early May so watch the papers for all details and see you all there. ----- "CYCLOPS" -------
