Match Report ("Advocate", 1st October, 1928)
TABLE CAPE ASSOCIATION - FINAL
The final match took place at Wynyard between Yeoman (minor premiers) and Wynyard Juniors on Saturday. There was a moderate attendance. The ground was in excellent order, and the game was played under excellent weather conditions. O. Hind, of Burnie, controlled the game as central umpire in a capable manner.
From the bounce Yeoman pressed hard, and proved too solid a combination for Wynyard. The scores at the end of each quarter were:-
First - Yeoman 1.6; Wynyard 1 behind
Second - Yeoman 3.10; Wynyard 1 behind
Third - Yeoman 5.18; Wynyard 1 behind
Final - Yeoman 8.20 (68 pts); Wynyard 3.5 (23 pts)
Yeoman were a well balanced side, and played more vigorously than their opponents. They picked their men well and were faster to the ball. Wynyard marked well, but the kicking on both sides was poor.
For Yeoman, Tom Franks was a tower of strength and he was well supported by Fred, Bob and W. Franks, Pegus (2), L Gardham, Shepherd, Lane and Shadbolt. Denny Harrison was best man for Wynyard, and others who worked hard were Jones (4), M'Innes, Lucas, Taylor, Thompson, Butler and Frimley.
Yeoman are the holders of the Table Cape Shield for the first twelve months.
The Table Cape Association was formed in 1923 with a view to developing talent for the senior team representing the municipality in the N.W.F. Union, and in this respect it must be considered that it has fully justified its existence. Each year it has provided some fine players who have taken their place in the senior ranks with distinction. In addition, a very fine competition has been provided for the teams comprising the association, and the majority of games have been played in a very clean and sportsmanlike manner. The work of the independent committee in dealing with players and disputes has been very light.
The teams which have won the premiership since the formation of the association are:
1923 - Wynyard; 1924 – Yolla; 1925 - Yeoman; 1926 - Yeoman: 1927- Burnie; 1928 - Yeoman
