Match Report ("Advocate", 4th September, 1978)
ROBINS STORM TO FIRST IN 26 YEARS
A five goal burst late in the third term enabled Yeoman to win the Darwin Football Association premiership on Saturday. The Robins' Grand Final win was a repeat of their second semi victory against Ridgley a fortnight ago.
Captain coach Geoff Gaby had his charges well and truly fired up before the match and it paid off in the opening minutes when bulky ruckman Tim Morse goaled twice. However, the Robins did not make full use of the wind in the first quarter, kicking 3.7 to Ridgley's 2.2. Yeoman looked the better side in this term, using hand ball effectively and directing the ball forward with long, penetrating kicks.
Yeoman applied the pressure again in the opening minutes of the second term and goals to Wayne Radford and Glen House put it 22 points up. Ridgley fought back late in the term with goals from Robert White, Radford, Hodgetts and Docking to make the difference only two points at half-time.
Once again it appeared as if Yeoman would squander its chances with the wind but late in the third term it suddenly sprung to life. Emin, Radford, Denny and Wynwood all goaled in the space of ten minutes to give the Robins a match winning 39 point lead at three quarter time. It was a brilliant passage of football with Yeoman doing everything right. The Robins attacked the ball fanatically, chased, tackled and, most importantly, finished it off with accurate shooting for goal.
The final quarter was merely a formality. Association best and fairest winner Laurie White tried to lift the Saints, but Yeoman already had the match parcelled up. White was clearly the best man afield in a game dominated by big men. He used his strength to advantage to open up packs, mark strongly and always backed his judgment.
His opposition ruckmen Tim Morse and Graeme Murfett were also their side's best players. The Saints' defence had no answer to Morse's bulky frame or Murfett's long arms when the ruckmen were changed at full forward.
The Robins also received great drive from interchange Geoff Emin who replaced Gaby in the first quarter. Emin regularly created a loose man and finished with three valuable goals.
Wayne Radford and Wynwood picked up plenty of kicks and Bramich was a real trier on a wing. Apart from White, Ridgley's four best players were centerman Richard Spurr, Peter Radford, captain-coach "Buck" Riley and wingman Trevor Carpenter.
