About Our Club

Welcome to the official South Geelong Kings Basketball Club website...

The 'Kings' have been around basketball circles in the Geelong area for decades in some form or another, mostly remembered wearing plain black singlets with white numbers and playing for independent adult teams back in the day.

In more recent years a number of 'Kings' junior teams started to develop out of schools in the area and it is from these junior teams whose parents and coaches eventually came together to establish us as a club.

In approximately 2003 the first known junior & senior 'Kings' club teams started to appear at the then named 'Life Be In It Centre' wearing purple/black/white uniforms and our club was officially born as an organised group, the South Geelong Kings.

Our club became legally Incorporated as an Association called the South Geelong Kings Basketball Club Inc., with its own By-Laws, Statement of Purpose and Rules in 2010. Of course everyone involved with the club has given their valuable time volunteering and continue to do so. Our past and future committee members should all be proud of their achievements because without them we wouldn't be here today.

The South Geelong Kings Basketball Club was initially duly recognised as an inaugural voting member the Corio Bay Basketball Association and then joined as a member of the Geelong Amateur Basketball Association with representation on the general committee of these Associations and teams playing in both Associations.

In 2019 a merger of these Associations to form the Geelong United Basketball Association brings our club into a new and exciting era of amateur basketball in the Greater Geelong region as an inaugural member of the new GUB Association.

The committee & members of the South Geelong Kings will always do their best to abide by our club's statement of purpose by serving the club and its members and providing opportunity for our community in the sport we love.

The 'SG Kings' is a family and community-oriented basketball club with a proud history of on-court success and achievement, yet it is our willingness to provide anyone of good character and at any skill level an opportunity to play basketball with us that we believe sets us apart.

Our club offers opportunity for men, women, boys and girls of any age or skill level to play basketball for the fun and enjoyment of the game, in accordance with the Basketball Victoria Codes of Conduct and our own club Rules and By-Laws.

If you are looking for a club to launch you into higher levels of basketball you have also come to the right place as we are regular representatives at local and state championship tournaments and can assist in providing guidance and player pathways.

Our club endeavours to provide coaches for all of our junior teams to develop players and improve their skills. Parents are considered an important part of this process too and keeping people involved in our club is crucial, so we are always looking to develop senior coaches from our parental group and older juniors.

Our club has a history of players representing their Associations at elite junior level basketball and we have juniors capable of coaching or officiating at all levels.

The club will continually look to explore community partnerships by offering our support in coaching or officiating and providing incentives for development opportunities where possible.

To stay financially viable and build a strong club that offers benefits to its members our club has established a membership fee structured for seasonal payment normally due each year in March/April & September/October at the start of each winter and summer season.

Our membership fee is crucial to keep the club going, however it is not expensive to join the Kings and compared with most clubs our fees are considered very affordable.

Photography Agreement: All players and members of the South Geelong Kings are assured that any photos taken on behalf of the club for use on our website or Facebook page will be so used with the permission of the player/member and that such permission is hereby considered as granted by the player/member once that person joins our club.

All due care and consideration will be taken in the use of photographs on our website or Facebook page. The club is not considered liable for images of players/members used or misused outside of the club's control or after being posted online.

In 2017 our teams began to play at both the Geelong Basketball & Netball Centre in Crown Street, South Geelong and at Basketball Geelong at the AWA Stadium on Crows Road, Belmont making us a unique dual association club. From the 2019-20 season the merged Association, Geelong United, sees our club join part of a greater organisation and enter a new era of basketball in the region.

Our training is held at our community partner's gym/court located at the Montpellier Primary School in Highton. To arrange additional training please contact the club. Details of training schedules will change from time to time and these updates are usually listed on the front page of our official website and under the 'club news' - 'training' tabs.

The club is always on the look out for players and coaches to come and join in on the fun and be part of our leadership team.

Parents and senior players (over 18 years) are encouraged to get involved with the club to assist in its development whether it be on our committee, as a coach, team manager or just by lending a hand..!

So, don't think about it too long, why not start your basketball fun today and launch a team with us or give us a call and we will do our best to find a place in one of our teams for you.

Go Kings!
