Keith played football for Coleraine in his younger years, which lead him to become the club secretary for 26 consecutive years from 1960 - 1985, then again from 1991 - 1994. He was recognised with life membership of the club in 1967. Keith also served as the president of the Western Border Football League when he had his break from his beloved "Maroons"! Those who knew Keith knew he had a special relationship with the umpires, even bring them home for tea! When Keith could not be found at home, he could always be found at Silvester Oval doing whatever needed doing, from lighting the fire so the players had hot water for the showers, to sweeping out the rooms and cutting up the oranges! His wife Val told him to take his bed over there he liked the place that much. Keith was recognised with an Order of Australia medal in 1995 for his contribution to country football and the Coleraine community, 5 months before he passed away. The Spong name is still going strong around the club, we know no different!
