Information for players

Thank you for your interest in playing basketball with Weston Creek Woden Dodgers Junior Basketball. These notes contain important information about the 2021 Junior Winter season, and should be read in conjunction with information on the registration form.

Age groups and dates (for 2021 Junior Winter season)

A player’s age group is determined by their year of birth.

U10 - born 2012+

U12 - born 2010 or 2011

U14 - born 2008 or 2009

U16 - born 2006 or 2007

U19 - born 2003, 2004 or 2005

The Club recommends and prefers that children play in the age group appropriate to their year of birth. However, it is permissible for players to participate in the next older age group (e.g. U/12s can play in U/14s).

In exceptional circumstances, such as for specific medical conditions, children may be permitted to play in a younger age group. Please contact the Club as soon as possible if you believe this applies in your case.

Ball size:

We recommend all players have their own ball (a basic one from Big W, K-Mart etc is fine) and practise in the backyard!

Girls and boys U10 - size 5

Girls U12-U19, boys U12 and U14 - size 6

Boys U16 and U19 - size 7

Hoop height:

If you have an adjustable hoop, here are the heights:

U10 - 8 ft 6 in (2.61m)

U12 and older - 10 ft (3.05m)

Gradings:

With the exception of Under 10s, all age groups have different divisions to reflect varying playing skills and standards.

Grading trials are generally held in term 3 to help allocate players to teams for the summer season, because some players go up to the next age group for the summer season.

Playing and training times

Playing times are generally for 55 minutes on a Saturday (for U/10, U/12 and U/14) and Sunday (for U/14, U/16 and U/19). Division 1 competitions in all grades are generally Friday night. Players will be advised of their playing times as soon as the information is made available from Basketball ACT.

Most teams will train in playing weeks for an hour. Training times and venues will be advised before the start of the season.

Please note that training entitlements are subject to team numbers, and the times and duration of training may change.

Playing in more than one team

At the Club’s discretion and subject to Basketball ACT rules, junior players may play in more than one team in the same or next age group. A discounted fee may apply for participation in the second team.

It is not permissible for a person to play for two clubs or schools in the same age group (for example, a player may not play for a school team in U/12 C grade, and for Weston Creek Woden Dodgers or another Club in U/12 B grade).

Transfers from other clubs

Players who last played for another club, even if it was one or more seasons ago, MUST have a letter or email from that club which confirms that the player has no outstanding obligations. Similarly, this club will not issue clearances to players who owe money, unless we have agreed in writing to a repayment scheme. Uniforms

Players are required to purchase Dodgers shorts and singlets. For more information see Club Uniforms.

Your privacy

In order for you or your child(ren) to participate in Basketball ACT competitions, and for Club administrative purposes, we need to collect and maintain personal information, including each player’s name, address, telephone number and date of birth.

We are required to pass on some of this information to Basketball ACT, and to Basketball Australia. Your agreement to this is a condition of your child(ren)’s membership and participation.

Personal information will only be divulged to authorised Club officials, and then only to the extent necessary for the specified purpose. For example, we normally need to make available to your team’s coach and manager your child’s name, date of birth, playing number, phone number and email address. If you advise us that a telephone number is silent (unlisted), we will instead provide a mobile number, if you have one.

Except as outline above, we will not divulge identifiable personal information to third parties, except at your request or if required by law.
