The Toronto Dingos struggled on the road once again in a match that could have major Finals implications, this time to the Grand River Gargoyles who got revenge for a Round 1 loss vs the Red and Black.
The Round 9 matchup proved to be a one-sided sided affair on the field itself, with a strong crosswind kicking up after the first quarter and relegating one set of goalposts essentially unreachable for either team. Unfortunately for the Red and Black, the homesquad Gargoyles played to their strengths on their home turf and made the most of their advantages with the wind. The Dingos had no help from the injury gods either, as the midfield rotations were crippled by multiple hamstring injuries in what has unfortunately become the story of the 2019 Dingo season. With the wind making the 3rd quarter crucially important for the Red and Black, the obstacles proved too much to overcome as the homesquad ran away to a 9-goal margin by the final siren.
Midfielders Michael Ladd and Geoff Hansen bore the brunt of the injuries fallout, gutting it out with no rotations through all four quarters, while forward Stefan Cosma was forced to roam the entire field in an effort to link to the Dingo forward line. Two goals by Thomas Santibanez-Espinosa (playing on one leg) highlighted the offensive display, while backliners Justin Powick (with some stunning mid-air fourth-quarter marks) and rookie Conrad Charlton (laying out some major hip-and-shoulder bumps) provided a major lift on the defensive end. Once again, the Red and Black were forced to accept the silver-lining of quality experience for a young team in exchange for a difficult loss.
FINAL SCORE:
Dingos - 3.6-24
GARGOYLES - 12.7-79
Dingo Goals - T. Santibanez-Espinosa 2, M. Ladd
The Dingos will take the long weekend break to nurse some injuries before squaring off against the Toronto Rebels for Round 10, in the 2nd annual Tim Shaw Memorial Cup - which this year will feature an old-boys game immediately following the match.
