PRELIM FINAL: Forestville Eagles v Norwood Flames

While the Eagles failed to overcome the huge test that is the Pioneers over the weekend, the Flames ousted North Adelaide in a thriller. The Flames were able to produce strong offence through Lycett and Brine, with some good help from Legan, but the most impressive part of their performance was their defence. The side clamped down on the Rockets when they needed to to get the W though. The Eagles struggled in their game against Mt Gambier and were unable to produce the game they would have liked on both ends of the floor against a seemingly unstoppable Pioneers side.

The last time these two teams met, Forestville grabbed a convincing 12-point win. The Eagles’ depth on offence was too overwhelming for the Flames and got on top despite the Flames also scoring big. Norwood will need to continue their defensive form this week and prevent players like Deng, Teys, Mays and Harris from making a big impact if they want to win. On the other hand, Forestville will also need to be on their toes defensively, with Norwood also boasting a deep line-up.

Ones to watch:

Majok Deng
Deng was a standout for the Eagles against Mt Gambier over the weekend, continuing his form to drop 27 points and grab 14 boards. The Flames will be looking to quell his influence on the offensive end, but also get around him on defence, an area he can also take a game over in. If he fires, the Eagles are always a shot.

Michael Harris

Harris was quieter than he would have hoped in his team’s loss. If he was a bit more efficient, the Eagles would have been a great chance to steal a win. This is why he is one to watch. He has that X-factor on offence, and if he can contribute well, the Eagles will be getting the extra support they need to make the grand final.

James Legan

Legan was solid against the Rockets, but he can definitely produce better. Look for him to try and improve on the weekend’s performance and have a bigger impact against a hungry Forestville side to ensure his team has the best chance possible of getting through to the big game. His ability to score from almost anywhere will be something the Eagles have to crack down on.

Prediction

The Eagles will be eager to right their wrongs from last week, improving defensive coverage and execution on offence under high pressure. On the other hand, Norwood will be wanting to improve their offence a bit after just defeating North Adelaide with stellar defence. This should be an extremely entertaining game which could go either way. It’s hard to go past a stacked line-up like the Eagles which can get out and run, shoot, pass and play strong defence. Forestville will play more consistently through four quarters, win by 6 points and set up a rematch with the Pioneers in the grand final.
