ROUND EIGHTEEN: Southern Tigers v South Adelaide Panthers

Much like Norwood, the Tigers still have everything to play for with the finals looming and their position still hanging in the balance. As we know, the Tigers struggled down the stretch against the Eagles when they met, but bounced right back with a 2-point overtime victory over Sturt. The win allowed some breathing room between them and the Flames as well as restored some momentum heading into the final weeks of the regular season. Ta’Rea Cunnigan lead the Tigers with 23-points. But that isn’t the highest point of the contest at all… young Isabella Stratford dashed any chance of a Sabre victory by sinking the winner with only 1-second remaining from deep. This rollercoaster of emotions and how they use it to keep untapping their potential will be pivotal for the remaining period of their 2019 campaign. In their second leg of their doubleheader weekend, South Adelaide will have their hands full against a hungry Tiger unit who will try to make an example out of them. Depending on the outcome of their fixture against North Adelaide, South may put up quite the fight to help spoil any chance of the Tigers making the postseason.

Although they got a win, the Tigers will be disappointed with their 77-74 effort against Sturt. The Sabres managed to hold Turnage to 17 points and if it wasn’t for some of Gilligan’s 24-point performance, Southern would have undoubtedly lost. They defended very well however, closing down on their Sturt opponents at every turn and holding them to a low score. The Panthers could not stop an in-form Norwood offence over the weekend, going down by 13 points and coming away with a lot to work on. Allmon and Barton combined for 40 for their side, but they are going to need more help when they come up against a strong Tigers defence. They will also want to cut down on turnovers and try to show a bigger presence inside, where Southern are so dangerous. It’s hard to see the Tigers losing after last week however, which would have served as a bit of a wakeup call.
