ROUND EIGHTEEN: Mt Gambier Pioneers vs Sturt Sabres

WOMEN by Kieren Vartuli

Coming off back-to-back wins in Round 17, the Pioneers will look to make a statement by knocking off one of the title contenders in Sturt. Sturt have had a troublesome few weeks with 3 of their last four resulting in a win or loss by 2 or less points. After such a strong start to the season and a very slow decline, we can’t help but wonder if they are capable of regrouping and taking out the Championship. A victory over the surging Pioneers will answer many questions but that is easier said than done. Mount Gambier are currently tying 2nd with Sturt and a victory for either side will provide them some breathing room as we head into the final few rounds. Against the Bearcats last weekend, the Pioneers put their abilities on display by overcoming West with only 7 players checking into the contest. The lack of available bench and ability to knock off one of the toughest sides this year shows that they are definitely the ones to watch come finals!

Hang Time prediction: Mt Gambier Pioneers

MEN by Daniel Renfrey

The Pioneers easily disposed of the Warriors in Round 17, keeping them to 72 points while scoring 118 themselves. The team’s defence was at its best, with timely rotations and set-up overwhelming the Woodville offence and creating 22 turnovers. Mt Gambier also recorded 14 steals and 8 blocks. Offensively, the team was on fire, recording a huge 38 assists with great ball movement and with Dickson, Tom Daly and Barkley combining for 74 points. The Sabres will struggle against this Mt Gambier team to say the least, but they can take positives away from their performance against Tigers in a 74-77 loss. Sturt’s defence was suffocating and their offence was even-spread, with Carleton scoring 17 with five assists and seven rebounds. However, they also turned the ball over 22 times, which was what lost them the game. This one shouldn’t be close, with the Pioneers too good on both ends of the floor and too deep.
