AFL Victoria Partners with Bill Hutchison Foundation

AFL Victoria’s Youth Girls Academy has announced a new major partnership with the Bill Hutchison Foundation.

The Bill Hutchison Foundation (BHF) is a charitable arm of the Essendon Football Club and is a public fund listed on the Register of Harm Prevention Charities. The Foundation’s mission is “to have a positive impact on the lives of children and young people, by implementing or supporting harm prevention actions, with an emphasis on rural and regional Victoria

The BHF provides financial support for organisations or programs that actively work towards harm prevention, and designs and runs programs in partnership with other organisations and programs.

Named in honour of one of Essendon’s best players, the Foundation aims to emulate Bill Hutchison’s impeccable off field character.

The partnership also sees greater involvement from the Essendon Football Club.

The academy, an Australian first, gives 50 of Victoria’s most promising under-18 players, and 15 aspiring umpires, a chance to fast-track their development. It is a unique opportunity for girls and young women to continue their involvement in football, and to develop them as role models in their local communities and football competitions.

The academy includes a number of different elements:

· Monthly skills training at Windy Hill and use of change rooms and a meeting room, thanks to the Essendon Football Club;

· Opportunities to undertake coach and umpire courses

· Leadership and personal development seminars; and

· A minimum of four hours work in the community each year.

This partnership will enable a new, revised Academy program in 2010, which will provide Youth Girls Academy members with the opportunity to make regular contributions to the extensive community service efforts of both the BHF and the EFC.
