CLUB officials from across the west came together on Wednesday night for a special Footy Culture Evening as part of Multicultural Round celebrations.
Volunteers, coaches, players, officials and AFL Victoria staff gathered at the Visy Hub in Sunshine for the special event, which included talks by Western Bulldogs premiership hero Jason Johannisen, team mate Lin Jong and North Melbourne’s Majak Daw.
Daw has a strong connection to the west, he was a Wyndhamvale junior, played for the Western Jets and has been involved with Werribee Football Club in the VFL. He is also an Australia Post AFL Multicultural Ambassador.
The Footy Culture night was held in conjunction with Centre for Multicultural Youth and was held to help raise awareness of the different cultures within our community and to educate local clubs with ways to embrace its diverse members into AFL.
As well as listening to some of the AFL’s stars, clubs also heard from two Centre for Multicultural Youth ‘Shout Out’ speakers, Sherry-Rose Bih and Abukar Ali.
AFL Diversity Manager Xavier Moloney said last night’s was an important step towards creating a more inclusive game.
“AFL Victoria is extremely excited to introduce our Footy Culture event to some of our community leagues, which we believe will assist clubs with a greater understanding of how they can embrace some of Victoria’s newest residents not only into their clubs but the wider football family,” he said.
