The Star Drill- Beginner
The start drill is an infield, fielding & throwing drill that reinforces the need for quality throws & communication in the infield.
What you need – You will need an athlete at each position in the infield, a coach hitting the ball & a base runner.
How this drill works – The coach (who is standing at home plate) hits a ground ball to shortstop (now once the ball is hit the base runner who is also at home plate, runs to first base) short stop then throws to first, first then throws to third, third then throws to second, second then throws home. This completes 1 cycle of the drill.
Once you have completed a full cycle of this drill the athletes then rotate clock wise to the next position, please note the base runner will replace the athlete at home & the athlete that was playing first base will now become the base runner. This must be done at a fast pace with each position calling either the athletes name or their position with every throw.
This drill stresses the importance of good quality throws & communication to each position. The diagram below will help describe how this drill works.
Result – Your athletes will make great throws under pressure to each base & communication between base will become natural during games.
