Brisbane Strikers bowed out last weekend but Queensland still will be represented in the PlayStation 4 NPL Finals Series Grand Final with confirmation Alex King has been appointed as match referee.

The 24-year-old Queenslander will take the whistle for the match-up between Edgeworth FC and Sydney United 58 in Sydney – with the winner crowned the champion of the national second tier.

King is one of Queensland’s most promising young match officials and has served on the Hyundai A-League’s fourth official panel for the past two seasons.

He made his debut as a Hyundai A-League referee in late 2015 when he replaced the injured Alan Milliner for the final 20 minutes of the match between Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory in the New Zealand capital.

Football Queensland State Referee Development Officer David Wiebe said King’s appointment was part of the continued recognition for Queensland’s referee training and education.

“Alex has progressed from the ranks of community football through to the national panel and this latest appointment is just reward for his hard work and dedication,” Wiebe explained.

“It’s another example that the pathway for referees in Queensland is strong and that we are continuing to produce high-quality referees in this state.”

“Football Queensland has put plenty of effort and resources into our referee programmes as part of our service to the whole of football.”

“It’s great to see another Queensland product take the whistle in a big game like this and I’m sure he will do a great job,” he concluded.

The winner of the PlayStation 4 NPL Finals Series Grand Final will receive automatic qualification to the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Round of 32.
