Rigby Tips Tough Cup Test

WST Jesse Rigby

Words: Matt Dorman

Western Pride captain Jesse Rigby is expecting a stern physical test for his young side in Wednesday’s Westfield FFA Cup qualifier against Ipswich Knights.

Rigby, despite being just 17, has assumed a senior role in Karl Dodd’s rebuild, helping one of PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland’s most inexperienced squads to third place.

The midfielder predicted another typical derby against Knights after Pride were bundled out of the competition by the same opponents last year.

“They’re going to come out physical,” Rigby said.

“We went out to watch them against Moggill (in the Trophy Superstore Premier League) and they looked like a really good side but we won’t change how we play.

“It was just to have a look because I think a few boys haven’t really experienced these types of teams before.”

Pride enter the contest with renewed confidence after the weekend’s 2-1 win over Redlands United cemented their place in the top four.

Rigby missed that match due to suspension but was pleased with his teammates’ response to falling a goal behind.

“On the sidelines it was pretty nervy to watch but they got a good win,” he said.

“Redlands are a good side. They have a lot of experience but I thought we held out well.

“The boys are pleased but we’re just taking the games one by one.”

Just three wins away from the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32, the Rockhampton product was hopeful of strong Pride support at Eric Evans Oval to help claim bragging rights.

“I think it will be a big turnout,” he said.

“I’m not sure what the Knights base is like but hopefully we can get a few down there.”
