Five-Star Olympic Down Souths

Words: Matt Dorman

Olympic FC Women have made a dream start to their season with a heavy 5-0 win over Souths United Women at Wakerley Park on Sunday.

Three first-half goals and a further two after the break sealed the rout for the visitors.

Much of the damage was done early for Olympic as defender Leah Miles netted the opener in the 18th minute, before winger Jazmyn Perin struck just two minutes later.

Souths managed to stem the onslaught but couldn’t keep JJ McLean from effectively sealing the result on the stroke of half time, the attacker tapping into an empty net after Demi Robins struck the post from range.

Warm conditions and a more resilient Souths couldn’t keep the visitors from continuing their scoring as incisive wing play from Matalena Daniells saw her tee up fellow substitute Mikaela Di Savia to make it 4-0 with an easy finish.

New signing Ai Matsuzaki added the finishing touches in the final moments for Olympic with the goal of the game, unleashing a dipping left-footed effort to complete the scoring.

Souths coach Byron Hellmuth identified two particular areas for improvement ahead of next weekend’s trip to Moreton Bay United.

“We had a bit of difficulty playing out so we’ll look at, as well as looking at our shape in the middle,” Hellmuth said after the match.

Despite the strong win, Olympic coach Phil Canham hopes his young side will continue to mature in front of goal.

“Once they knew what was happening I thought they were able to take advantage of the spaces to create chances, but the recognition still needs to improve,” Canham said.
