Fiji Men celebrate a 17-2 win over Vanuatu
Fiji Men cemented their top position in World League as well as in Oceania Pacific Cup. Leaving Vanuatu no chance the tournament hosts took away a 17-2 victory. This result was the highest margin in Men’s competition this year so far.
Fiji started with great pace and converted their first scoring opportunity right away. James Saqacala had the tip-in at penalty corner. Soon after, Leevan Dutta scored a hat-trick lifting the score to 4-0.
When Fiji team-captain Hector Smith JR picked up an injury and had to be carried from the pitch the crowd got silent. It did not seem as Smith JR would return very quickly.
Despite of this shock, Fiji carried on with their dominance adding 4 more goals thanks to Dutta (2), Denzel Mock, Adrian Smith.
Danny Toara scored from a counter-attack bringing Vanuatu up on the sheet. Everybody in the stadium including Papua New Guinea women was cheering for team Vanuatu.
Fiji stayed the dominant side also in the second half extending their lead to 12-1. Mock, Alsace Smith and again Adrian Smith (2) were the goal scorers.
However, Toara pulled one more back for Vanuatu being celebrated by the spectators.
Strikes from Adrian Smith (3) and Dutta (2) secured the victory.
Fiji’s men of the match were Dutta scoring 7 goals and Adrian Smith scoring 6 goals.
Adrian Smith said they weren’t really satisfied with the match. “It wasn’t convincing. We could’ve done better but we’re happy with the win. We will try to win the Oceania Pacific Cup but it’s our first goal to qualify for the World League Round 2.”
