Basso An Impressive Young Baller

One of the clear standout stories of the Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Lady Wolves season has been the arrival of Olivia Basso onto the WA State Basketball League scene.

Incredibly at just 15 years of age, Basso has been called upon to handle some big moments in key games, and none more important than being given the task to hit the triple to take the Wolves into OT against the Mandurah Magic last Saturday night.

Rolling off the screen, Basso got clear of her direct opponent and splashed an excellent pressure shot, to the rapturous applause of the Wolfpack faithful.

It was an excellent piece of high-pressure execution and a significant sign that despite her tender age, Basso is comfortable and in control on the big stage, in the big moments. Having suited in 12 of 13 games this season, for a total 48 minutes, Basso is clearly a developing player, and being eased into her first full season of SBL Basketball.

With a record of 6-16 (37.5%) from the arc, she is relishing the opportunity and licence to shoot the three ball and with time and experience those made stats will undoubtedly increase. Her ability to remain composed and understand and execute a plan is a hallmark of her game, and the likely result of a life lived in and around the Basketball courts of WA.

Her brother, Bailey, a Wolves contracted Men's SBL player who also possesses form at range and a genuine shooter's mentality, is formally recognised as the individual who took the first-ever official shot in HBF Arena, at the club's Gala Opening Night.

Lady Wolves Senior Assistant Coach Brad Robbins (who, incidentally, starred at ABA level as a 15 year old in Victoria before moving on to a storied NBL career) is thrilled with Basso's development.

"Olivia is just the quintessential coachable kid. She is the first in the gym, and the last one out shooting, and at 15 years of age that is a really impressive sign' Robbins explained.

"Her work ethic and dedication is highly evident and if she can maintain and further grow that hunger to compete and succeed, she will have a very bright future in the game" Robbins concluded.

Catch 'Young Gun' Olivia Basso and all her WSBL team this Saturday night at The Battle of Joondalup III - Wolves v Stirling from 6.00pm at HBF Arena.
