GEELONG REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MEN’S ROUND 13 PREVIEW

LEAGUE leaders Surfside Waves will be aiming to slip away from the pack when they travel to Hume Reserve on Sunday to take on bottom side Corio in Round 12 of the Men’s Division One competition.

The Waves, currently on 21 points, ascended to top spot after defeating the previous table toppers Deakin Ducks last weekend.

An intriguing scenario has developed at the top of Division One, with the Ocean Grove outfit just one point clear of second placed Rangers and a further point ahead of 3rd placed Deakin, 4th placed Drysdale SC and 5th placed Barwon Reds – all of whom are on 19 points apiece.

Rangers host the Ducks in a mouth watering ‘second versus third’ encounter at Myers Reserve on Sunday, with the prospect of one or both of the combatants dropping points aiding Surfside’s cause.

Barwon, meanwhile, will come up against 6th placed Breakwater Eagles at the White Eagle Club at 3:00pm on Sunday, while Drysdale will have the week off due to the bye.

With the congested nature at the top of the Division One standings, a victory for Barwon - along with a slip-up or two in the other games by those teams above the Grovedale based outfit - could quite easily see the Reds catapult up several spots on the ladder. Possibly as high as top spot...

DIVISION TWO:

As is the case with Division One, the top four teams in Division Two will all be playing each other in Round 12 action this weekend.

Lara SC will host Barwon Heads in the match of the round at the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday, in a game that the Cats must win in order to stay in striking distance of the top two. Kick-off is at 1:00pm.

Lara - currently in 3rd spot with 23 points - is chasing second placed Barwon Heads (27 points) and the competition leaders, Surf Coast FC on 31 points. Surf Coast tackles 4th placed Deakin Ducks at Banyul Warri Reserve on Friday night at 7:30pm.

In other matchups, Bell Park hosts Bellarine Sharks, Elcho Park Cardinals are at home to Breakwater Eagles and Barwon Blue take on Drysdale at Grovedale Reserve.

DIVISION THREE:

Surfside Waves White will have an opportunity to leapfrog Deakin Ducks Green into third spot on the Division Three ladder, when the two teams meet at Shell Road Reserve on Sunday.

In the pick of the other games in Division Three, league leaders Geelong SC have a relatively easy home tie against 10th placed Surf Coast Yellow at Stead Park on Sunday (3:00pm kick-off), while second placed Corio Bay Blue should win against 9th placed Bellarine Sharks at Lake Reserve in St Leonards, also on Sunday (1:00pm).
