NEWS: Geelong Region Women’s Div 1 - Round 11 Preview

COMPETITION leaders Drysdale hosts third placed Surf Coast in the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 Match of the Round at Howard Glover Reserve on Saturday.

Led by leading goalscorer Francesca Ciuffetelli who has netted on 10 occasions this year, the Torquay side has been in fine form recently and has exceeded all expectations in its first year in the elite Women’s division since being promoted from Division 2 last year.

Drysdale, meanwhile, has accumulated 26 competition points after ten completed rounds and is five points clear of the Coasters but just two ahead of second placed Deakin Ducks. Drysdale coach Craig Riley will be looking to his twin goal machines of Serena Clapp (14 goals) and Shannon Daffy (12 goals) to spearhead the leaders’ assault on the Coasters.

Should Drysdale drop its bundle against Surf Coast, however, the Ducks will be eagerly lying in wait to jump into top spot. Especially taking into account the fact they are faced with a relatively ‘easy’ assignment against bottom side Geelong SC at Deakin University on Waurn Ponds.

The League’s leading goalscorer, Hannah Gordon, will be looking to increase her impressive season’s goal tally of 19 goals against the struggling Lions on Saturday.

In the remaining Round 11 matches, 6th placed Surfside Waves kick-off the weekend with a derby clash with 7th placed local rivals Barwon Heads at Shell Road Reserve on Friday night, while 4th placed Barwon will travel to Bell Post Hill in an attempt to keep 5th placed Kardinia at bay at the Kardinia International College on Saturday afternoon.
