NEWS: Final GRFC league fixtures released for 2016 season

FOOTBALL Federation Victoria on Friday released the Final Fixtures for the 2016 GRFC league season which will start on Friday the 9th of April. A total of 30 teams will participate in three divisions of the Men’s competition, 15 clubs have entered the two Women’s divisions, while seven teams will participate in the inaugural Men’s Masters’ (Over 35s) competition.

The Men’s section of the GRFC league has been split up into a 14 team Division One league, following a merger of the two top divisions from last year, while a 16 team Division Two has now been split up into two 8-team conferences, dubbed the ‘North’ and ‘South’ conferences.

The new Men’s Over 35s competition is set to take the region by storm, with seven teams entered, following the last minute entry of Elcho Park Cardinals. There is a slight possibility that an ex-Socceroo will be playing for the Cardinals while 78-year-old Everitt Nelson is set to be the oldest (registered) footballer when the evergreen goalkeeper dons the strip for Drysdale SC in the Masters’ league.

For the first time in several years, the Women’s section has once again expanded to a two division format with six teams taking part in the elite Division One league and a further nine teams in Division Two.

The other big news surrounds the Junior Boys’ competition with enough teams registering in the Under 12s, 13s and 15s age groups, enabling the competition to split into a Division A and Division B format, while there will be 11 teams in the U17 competition.
