Heart Break for the Goanna's

Changes to Australia competing at the 2011 World Championships

It is with much regret that DBA has to advise that the men’s team has not been successful in nominating for the 2011 World Deaf Basketball Championships in Palermo, Sicily.

The women’s team will still be going, but the men’s have not been successful.

There were 18 countries nominated for the 16 positions available in the men’s division, and Australia was one of the teams unsuccessful.

DBA has been negotiating this with ICSD for many months now, but was advised yesterday that they were unsuccessful. Positions in both World Championships and Deaflympics will now be obtained only through qualifying tournaments.

While this situation was considered a remote possibility, the DBA Board has already agreed that a men’s national team will still be formed and travel overseas on a tour during 2011.

As such, selection camps will continue and the national program, organised earlier this year, will still go ahead with negotiations taking place to find a suitable country or countries for the tour in the coming weeks.

Australia will need to compete at the 2012 Asia/Pacific Games in Korea to qualify for the 2013 Deaflympics, and this will provide ideal preparation for these important games.

DBA believes that the preparation programs for the National teams provides vital training and experience for our players, particularly the new younger players coming into focus for 2011. We hope that the selection camps will feature both new and old players vying for the honour of representing Australia on the international stage.
