Hector Smith(Senior) has been the Ventures Mens coach since the dawn of dinosaurs...Not that his old or anything... He has also been the Fiji Mens coach since 1999 and still has a lot to offer.
Last year, we journeyed together on a misson to WIN all the tournaments in the Fiji Hockey Calender before he steps down as coach. As time went by it was getting close to the time where we have to live us and embark on further training to increase his knowledged about coaching.
He certainly went further, to India, for a FIH (International Hockey Federation) Coaching Clinic. In this coaching clnic they had big power house names for hockey. They had coaches from Australia/Germany/South Korea/India etc in this clinic.
Mr Smith came back from India and said that he has really learnt alot about coaching. One thing that he learnt was there is no need to do the 12min runs but instead have short games that is done at high tempo. We had a training session on Saturday morning and Mr Smith came with one of the new drills that he learnt while he was away and I speak for the boys it was hard work for the short spell (3mins).
Mr Smith said that one thing that was common was the Self Discipline that each player should have in order to be the best team. So really if you want something badly its entirely up to you to make it happen.
Hector Smith hopes to attend more coaching clinic in the future and hopefully we will have his knowledged passed down to us when he takes up coaching again either for the club, Ventures or the National Mens Hockey team.
