MG Plasterers SECBL Round 1 Wrap

It was an entertaining and competitive first night of SECBL action at the Icehouse and Millicent Basketball Stadium last night, with new and improved teams fighting for a first up win.

Congratulations to Lily May, Lily Brook, and Tenielle Human, terrific young referees who assisted our senior referees in their debut SECBL games. BMG is developing a refereeing program to support and grow our referees, more details to come.

First up in the men’s, the Joeys (Roos) launched a spectacular display of 3-point shooting against the Millicent Saints, nailing 20 triples to bury the Saints 121 – 81. Mackye Baron scored from all over the court en route to a career high 41 points. Zach Nulty (26 pts) and Nelson Forbes (22 pts) were also offensively proficient for the Joeys. Josh Murphy was strong for the Saints inside with 27 points, and U16 SAC Country state players Jackson Bowden (16 pts) and Jack Haggett (16 points) showed off their talent.

In our MG MATCH OF THE WEEK, the Millicent Cats came away with a win in a hard-fought battle against the Panthers 73 – 62. Pioneers captain Jasmin Howe (15 pts) and young star Georgia Winter (27 pts) combined for 42 out the Cats 73 points, beating out Alyssa Duncan’s efforts of 20 points to capture the victory. Howe out-duelled her Pioneers backcourt partner Joey Jones, who was kept quiet by terrific Cats defense. Watch out for the next match up between these two sides!

In the men’s late game, the Cougars led by Jordy Hollitt (24 points) started well but fell behind to the winter champion Bulldogs despite Matt Berkefeld leaving the game with a dislocated finger. Shaun Lock started the season in fine form with 27 points and the ever-reliable Simon Berkefeld chimed in with 17 as the Bulldogs built a strong 3rd quarter lead. The De wit brothers (Kane 21 pts, Toby 15 pts) didn’t give up though mounting a late charge, but it wasn’t enough to topple the dogs running out winners 86 – 73.

To finish the evening we had an absolute barn burner between the Bullroo’s and Cougars. New Pioneers recruit Sophie Miles (17 pts) helped the Cougars to a 15 point lead in the third quarter, before the young Bullroo’s came steaming back in the final stanza. Unafraid of the moment, the Bullroo’s made basket after basket and with just 10 seconds to play reduced the lead to 1! But the Cougars held on, in a low scoring but high entertaining contest.
