Limestone Coast Basketball Grand-finals

LIMESTONE COAST BASKETBALL FINALS.

February 20th 2021.

Peter Seebohm Basketball Stadium Millicent.

The inaugural Limestone Coast Basketball Finals took place in Millicent over the weekend, a fantastic initiative to give senior Basketballers from Limestone coast basketball associations the opportunity to play when previous seasons had been affected by COVID.

The Mount Gambier Lakers Women’s side, coached by Bryan Green would have felt good about their chances on the day, particularly after coming away 12-point victors against Keith, Claire Hunter and Mikaela Horrigan each with 11 points led a well-balanced attack.

The win set up a grand final against Millicent who easily accounted for Naracoorte in their semi-final, winning by 50 points.

Millicent quickly stamped their authority on the game and never looked back, Sarah Ritter of the Lakers provided some resistance with 16 points, however it was Emily Winter and Jasmin Howe who would control the game for Millicent. Emily finishing with 30 points and awarded game MVP honours, and Jasmin 22 points of her own. Millicent would run away with a 90 – 55 victory.

Jasmin Howe and Laker Sarah Ritter were awarded joint season MVP awards.

The Men’s Lakers side who were without Braiden Ousey (injury), Kyle Tipene (Pioneers commitments) and Toby de Wit (Pioneers commitments) would play Keith in the Semi final managing a 12 point victory, Laker Duncan Reid leading his side with 23 points and well supported by Sam Stafford who had 19 of his own.

Millicent defeated Bordertown to once again create a Millicent v Mount Gambier Grand Final.

The Lakers side albeit undermanned were competitive from the opening tip, Matthew Berkefeld giving his side a much need perimeter boost with 11 points was a welcome return to the court. Duncan Reid again worked tirelessly for his side to finish with 15 points.

Millicent who was also missing a star in Erik Burdon went to their big-ticket Josh Murphy who got the job done on both ends leading his team to an 8-point victory.

Josh was also awarded game MVP as well as joint season MVP with Jordan Robertson of Keith.

The competition was a fantastic success and a lot of credit needs to go to those that drove the idea and made it happen.
