Two of Our Own accepted into Women in Basketball Program

A Fantastic initiative by SA Country Basketball in pursuing and receiving funding for a Women in Basketball Program from the SA Office of Recreation and Sport with the support of Basketball SA has given two people, Teresa Stewart and Olivia Slattery, within the Basketball Mount Gambier Community the opportunity to develop within their roles and provide even great benefit for themselves and the Basketball Mount Gambier members.

The aim of the program is to:

  • Increase the number of confident and competent female leaders, coaches and referees
  • Ensure female leaders, coaches and referees achieve the next level of accreditation and/or have the expertise to manage, coach or officiate
  • Assist in working towards 40-40-20 female representation in female leadership roles
  • Provide visible role models
  • Provide a mentor for each participant involved in the program for 12 months
  • Manage and develop the next generation of female leaders, coaches and referees in Basketball in a supportive environment

Olivia Slattery who is supporting the junior referee development as a Referee Coach was thrilled with the news she had been accepted into the program, ‘My excitement levels were through the roof. I am thrilled to learn more about basketball and leadership combined as well as meet many new faces.’

Basketball Mount Gambier Administration Officer Teresa Stewart was equally excited with the opportunity ‘It feels great to get accepted and I am looking forward to the opportunity.’

The WIB Program will be conducted by a combination of zoom conferencing and face-to-face delivery, in accordance with the current environment. Participants will gain invaluable knowledge and expertise in a supportive environment that will assist in future aspirations of becoming a female leader in Basketball.

Basketball Mount Gambier Chairman Phil Pedler is happy for both Teresa and Olivia, 'This is a wonderful initiative and Basketball Mount Gambier is proud of both Teresa and Olivia for pursing the opportunity and their acceptance into the program and hope they gain a lot from the experience.'
